Product Review: Skins By Unique Skins

We generally spend a lot of money on our consoles and handhelds, so we expect them to last a while. Some people want to customize the look or mod it to add cool features, even if it voids the warranty. Luckily, Unique Skins offers a way to both personalize as well help protect our devices.

As the name implies, you can design your own unique skin to apply to just about any electronic device. They can cut the skin to fit phones, tablets, netbooks to laptops, handhelds, consoles, and so much more. They can even make custom skins in various sizes for your walls!

The offer three different types of skin: scratch-resistant (default), clear, and puffy gel. The scratch-resistant skins are made from a highly durable, premium 3M material. The skin is finished with an anti-scratch, anti-UV finish, thus helping keep your device, and the skin images, to last for years to come!


Unique Skins also have screen protectors in their list of amazing, high-quality products. Their screen protectors are made from a material originally meant to protect military equipment. As if that wasn't durable enough, the screen protectors also have "self-healing" technology that helps small scrapes to repair over 24 hours!

I've ordered multiple times from Unique Skins and I'll be ordering more from them in the future! I can't wait for them to release a clear Nintendo 3DS skin so I can continue to show off my Zelda Edition 3DS without fear of accidentally scratching it. When I finally upgrade to a smartphone, you better believe I'll be slapping on a protective skin!

For Christmas a couple years ago, part of my gift to Mikey was a custom designed skin for his Nintendo DS. I picked images from two of his favorite series: Castlevania and Assassin's Creed. I used the on-site editor to add text (two quotes) to help fill some of the empty space. The two above pictures actually don't do the skins justice!

He loved the images I selected, how I placed them, and one of the quotes I used; he thought it was awesome and a bit costly. I didn’t bother to tell him how little it actually cost (only $10!) until he started to complain about how I supposedly spent more than he did.

For his birthday after that, his presents included a Unique Skins skin for his brand new netbook. When Unique Skins says their skins are made of durable, scratch-resistant material, they mean it! A few months after applying the skin, someone broke into his room and smashed a can of compressed air onto the netbook. The screen was cracked (and has since all but shattered) but there wasn’t a dent or a scratch on the skin. The netbook is still usable; we simply hooked it up to a separate monitor.

Without the protective skin, the top of the netbook would’ve been, at the very least, scratched up. It would’ve taken a miracle for the skin to protect the screen, so neither of us is holding it against Unique Skins. We’re both very happy with the quality of our skins from Unique Skins, even if we wish we’d never need to use them for protection. We will, however, probably invest in some of their screen protectors for all our future devices just for the extra peace of mind.

The skin is supposed to remove easily and mess-free, but we've never felt the need to try removing any of the skins. Our oldest skins are two years old, would you have guessed from the pictures? You should go to Unique Skins and see what amazing skins they can print out for you!
